Recollections of Laban Becker Harley
These recollections were copied
down by my grandmother, Esther Anna Harley and her sister, Iva Harley in 1943.
Laban was their father and my great grandfather. He
was born in 1859 near a little town called Union, Ohio. He lived into his nineties
but unfortunately died some years
before I was born. He lived with my grandmother and grandfather and my father
during the 1940's until his death in 1952. The old homestead of his childhood
is the setting for these recollections. Although most of this farm has passed
out of our family the house still stands and is beautifully preserved to this
day.
Farmer, carpenter, fisherman,
beekeeper, gardener and furniture maker;
Grandpa Harley was innovative, hard working and multi-skilled as were many Ohioians
of his generation. He was also prosperous and progressive enough to send both
his daughters to college in the 1920's.
I have many items from earlier days in Ohio History. They have filtered down through the years to me; and here I share them with whomsoever cares to read on and enjoy the remembrances of a life of days gone by.……. Charlotte 2002
